Allegheny County faces a range of natural resource challenges, including flooding, combined sewer overflows, a shrinking urban forest, degraded water quality and wildlife habitat and invasive species. Many of these problems are projected to worsen with changing environmental conditions. As public concern grows over the impact of shifting weather patterns on aging infrastructure, Allegheny County Conservation District (ACCD) is committed to helping municipalities find and implement effective solutions. ACCD works with all 130 municipalities in the county to plan, build capacity and unlock funding.
Together with partner organizations, ACCD offers expertise in stormwater management, tree planting, critical habitat protection and environmentally focused ordinances. These efforts reflect a strong commitment to addressing residents’ concerns and creating healthier, more resilient communities.
Through the Building Vibrant Communities initiative, ACCD is showcasing best management practices to protect, preserve and restore natural resources. Building Vibrant Communities is a collaborative effort between ACCD, Allegheny Land Trust, Green Building Alliance, Sustainable Pittsburgh and Tree Pittsburgh. The workshop series, which took place from 2024 to 2025, provided information and tools for municipalities and citizens to promote sustainability, secure funding and enhance resident health.
Financial and other support for the Building Vibrant Communities Workshop Series has been provided by the Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Grants Program.
This guide provides a summary of the content covered during the workshops, with an emphasis on concrete actions that municipalities can take to protect natural resources. These include ordinance revisions, best management practices and utilizing expert resources.
